Blantyre Mayor hails Nasolo Bridge project
Blantyre City Council Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman says Nasolo Bridge in Ndirande Township in Blantyre will ease mobility in the populous township following its rehabilitation after floods washed it away in 2023.
The bridge, destroyed in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, was rehabilitated at a cost of K700 million provided by Beit Trust.

Osman, who spoke after commissioning the bridge on Thursday, said the structure is crucial because it links communities in the township.
“This bridge is important because it reconnects communities and restores safe movement for people who depend on this crossing every day,” he said.
Osman further urged residents to protect the surrounding environment and avoid activities that may contribute to the pollution of waterways.
Beit Trust trustees’ representative in Africa David Long said the organisation financed the project following an appeal made after the destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy.
He said the trust worked with Blantyre City Council, government institutions and other stakeholders to identify a project that would directly benefit affected communities.
“We put the equivalent of $450 000 dollars into this project, recognising that it was essential for the people of Ndirande,” said Long.
He said the organisation mainly focuses on healthcare, education and conservation initiatives in line with the vision of its founder Alfred Beit.
“The Beit Trust is 120 years old this year and my hope is that this bridge will last another 120 years,” said Long.
